Green Cooling Powered By Solar Panels for Tengah Residential Households
In addition to being environmentally friendly, green cooling is also a cost-savings initiative. In Tengah, residents can save on their electricity bills and install energy-efficient air conditioners. Residents can also take advantage of a Privilege Program, which includes exclusive privileges from IKEA, Livspace, Inspire ID, Tokio Marine, sustainable insurance, and home energy appliance packages.
Centralised cooling system
Daikin and SP Group have announced their collaboration to install a centralised cooling system for residential houses in Tengah, Singapore. The two companies will work together to develop a comprehensive cooling solution and explore joint research, product innovation, and marketing opportunities. They will also explore future collaborative opportunities across Singapore and the region.
In October 2020, SP Group will open its MyTengah Experience Centre, a demonstration centre where residents can get a hands-on experience of the town’s cooling systems. The centre is open to walk-in visitors but advance bookings are strongly encouraged. The centre is designed to host up to 16 people at a time. The installation of a large-scale centralised cooling system is a significant step towards the development of a greener and more energy-efficient town. The township will also be Singapore’s first public housing estate to feature this innovative cooling technology.
The innovative system is designed to help residents monitor their utility consumption and the impact of their actions on the environment. The residential units will also be fitted with eco-boards that provide tips on reducing utility consumption. This will encourage a more sustainable lifestyle among residents. The community can also participate in utilities-saving competitions.
Solar-powered absorption chillers
Solar-powered absorption chillers are a promising energy-efficient cooling solution. The efficiency of these systems varies with the amount of sun exposure. Figure 6 illustrates the temperature variation of the inlet water to the chiller generator and outlet water to the evaporator. It also indicates the amount of solar heat supplied to the system and the cooling power load produced by the absorption chiller during the daytime.
The efficiency of solar collection systems can be calculated with the help of simple equations. The collector’s area is measured in m2, and the solar irradiation (MJ/m2) is taken into account. The heat energy of the absorption chiller is then expressed using an equation. It is also important to calculate the flow rate of the water supplied to the absorption chiller and the temperature of the water returned to the system.
Energy-efficient air conditioners
In the upcoming forest town of Tengah, which has around 8,000 BTO flats, residents can save around 15-20% in upfront and life cycle costs by installing energy-efficient air conditioners powered by solar panels. The centralised cooling system is just one of the many smart features in Tengah, which is billed as Singapore’s first smart energy and artificial intelligence town.
The LEZETi Hybrid Solar AC, manufactured by Thomas Edison Solar, runs on DC power from the solar panel without the use of an inverter or charge controller. It also does not require a backup battery. It can be connected directly to the main electricity grid if required.
Savings on electricity bills
Solar power has several benefits, not least of which is the ability to lower your monthly electricity bills. The electricity used to cool homes is one of the top energy expenses in most buildings, and it has a significant impact on power bills. Many electricity providers increase their rates during the summer, and it is important to find a solution that reduces your power consumption during the hotter months.
Solar panels can lower your electricity bills significantly, often by up to 50%. The amount of savings will depend on a number of factors, including the amount of sunlight your roof receives. The size and angle of your roof will also play a role. The largest factor is the local electricity rate. In Hawaii, average rates are over $28 per kilowatt hour.
Installation of solar panels
Installing solar panels in residential houses can help reduce the amount of energy a household uses. Heating and air conditioning systems account for more than a third of a typical household’s energy consumption. Global warming is expected to worsen this situation. The solution is to install solar panels to power the cooling systems.
Tengah will also feature an app for residents to track energy and water consumption. This will help residents make informed decisions on how to reduce their consumption. There will also be digital displays in each block, which will provide tips on how to reduce utility usage and encourage sustainable behaviour.
In addition to solar panels, the developers of Tengah are also installing a district cooling network similar to that of Singapore’s Marina Bay financial district. The district cooling network will use solar panels to power cooling units. The chilled water will then be piped through the residential houses. The district cooling network is expected to save 30% of the energy used by existing air conditioning systems. This will be equivalent to taking 4,500 cars off the road. Residents will be able to connect to the centralised cooling network or purchase traditional air conditioning units if they prefer.
