’21 Carpenter Hotel: Heritage boutique hotel pays tribute to its history and the Tengah EC Community.’
Walk into the past at 21 Carpenter Hotel, a boutique hotel located at the junction of North Bridge Road and Carpenter Street. Comprised of a five-storey, freehold commercial building and four neighbouring 99-year leasehold conservation shophouses, 21 Carpenter Hotel is the perfect mix of Chinese Art Deco and Mid-century Modern styles. The building was formerly a remittance house called Chye Hua Seng Wee Kee, and upon purchase by 8M Real Estate was estimated to be worth over $100 million. The property has also been designed to be sustainable, implementing a hybrid cooling system and triple-glazed windows.
Tengah EC is designed with environmental sustainability in mind. The use of natural and sustainable materials, energy-saving features and other eco-friendly initiatives help to reduce its overall environmental impact and create a green living environment for future generations. It also has a rainwater harvesting system that collects and stores rainwater for gardening, laundry and other activities, which help to save Mother Nature while ensuring comfort and convenience.
Architecture firm Woha were responsible for the project design, and wanted to incorporate elements from the former remittance house into the building. Stripping off layers of paint from the façade to reveal the original Shanghai plaster was a painstaking three year process. Woha also found and incorporated letters written by Chinese migrant workers into the interior and exterior design. The hotel features a rooftop pool, terraced garden, and Kee’s bistro, restaurant and bar curated by Michelin-starred chef Andrew Walsh.
Given its location in Singapore, 21 Carpenter Hotel is expected to attract a mix of leisure and business travellers, as it is within walking distance of Boat Quay, Clarke Quay, the Central Business District, and the Orchard Road shopping belt. In addition, the hotel is affiliated with Marriott International’s loyalty programme, Marriott Bonvoy. The 48-key hotel has been designed for sustainability, while also evoking the past, making it the perfect destination to experience both the new and old of Tengah EC.
